La mágica casa de Sarah Hart

Familia Hart

My chairs are back, looking just slightly different, of course. I think I might be an interiors Goldilocks, testing things out until I find what's just right. I think this new set up is finally just right. I'm sharing more photos of the change on my blog, and check out the new fall logo by the talented @kodystewartillustration! Happy Friday! I'm feeling on top of the world with yoga and errands done by 9:30 this morning.

From where I sit drinking my coffee, covered in calamine lotion and lamenting the fact that I thought it was a good idea to rip a huge cluster of poisonous vines off a bush in the front yard the other morning. It's now on my neck and face too. Yay!

I told the boys we could keep the tree on the third floor up for another day or two, but everything down here is back to normal. I'm usually totally bummed about the new year, but I'm feeling super excited and motivated about it this year. Let's hope it lasts!

This living room has gone through about 739 changes over the past two months since my husband ousted the orange couch. Which couch to bring up from the basement, where to put it, bringing a smaller tv back down, switching up rugs, I'm crazy, etc., etc., etc. BUT! It's finally done! #nomoremovingcouches (p.s. our striped ikea chairs needed to be moved up to our family room, so I found these beauties for $140 A PIECE ONLINE AT WALMART. #saywhat?! Searching Craigslist for old ones was not helpful because they were so expensive and needed to be reupholstered. Other knock-offs I found were more expensive as well and not quite as large as these. So I'd say Walmart for the win!)

I love how a jute rug can instantly add warmth to a space. I especially love that this one from @rugs_usa comes in an oval version, which I think adds a little more interest to a room. Here's to making a dark, rainy Friday a little bit more warm and inviting!

Last week we looked at a house in a different town. It was built in the 1700’s and boasted much more space and much more land, so basically my dream. I mean, there was a damn fox running through the yard! #ihaveathingwithfoxes #ithoughtitwasasign I’m a pretty impulsive person and could have put an offer in on the spot, but after discussing things with my husband it made me really think about why I feel the need for change. Yes, we could use some more space and yes, we could use some more land, but why make a drastic change when we don’t have to? Our kids love it here, our best friends are here and it’s a much easier commute to NYC for my husband. I gave up on the idea of anything bigger happening for me in this space a long time ago and no longer worry about likes or follows, but I’m sure some sort of residual sick feelings of keeping up linger for me. In an IG world of people always moving and having babies, it’s hard to not want that for yourself, but it’s not healthy to always compare. Like, not at all. We have a good life, and whether or not I’m “boring” in this space doesn’t matter at all. I’m glad I realized it makes more sense to stay put, although I’m never giving up on that Vermont dream!

Finally worked up the courage to hang this mirror (and it doesn't come crashing down), which means the new living room set-up is allllllmost done! Just waiting on my chairs to return from the reupholsterer.

I crawl out of bed around 5:30 every morning so I can make coffee and lunches in peace. This quiet time before the boys come down for breakfast is everything because I am NOT a morning person. I can drink my coffee, watch the news and try to wake up so that I don't bite someone's head off when they complain about the morning's breakfast choice. #whoneedsmoresleepwhenyoucandrinkcoffeeinpeace

Gideon's first school painting proudly on display. ❤ For the first time since becoming a mother almost eight years ago I had the morning to myself. I didn't do anything outrageous, mainly because I spent seven hours cleaning out the basement yesterday and figured my to-do list could wait until tomorrow, but I feel re-energized at naptime rather than at the end of my rope. More patient. It's amazing what just a few hours of alone time can do for you! Sure, I missed him like crazy and tip toed around the house because it kind of felt like he was napping upstairs or something, but knowing he had a great time creating art and playing with kids his own age while I was able to recharge my battery, so to speak, makes it all worth it. #weshallseehowtomorrowgoes #itoldmyhusbandineedanotherbaby

Went to the local garden center this morning to pick up a few pumpkins for the boys to paint and came across this beauty of a plant. I’m a huge fan of the fiddleleaf fig, don’t get me wrong, but I think this cordyline might be my new favorite. #thecolorthough

Una publicación compartida de Sarah Hart (@homeiswherethehartis) el

We don't really have wall space to hang things in our living room since it's basically all windows, but this spot always felt empty to me. I unintentionally found these while Father's Day shopping on Etsy for my husband, and I think they're just what this little wall needed. Funny how you often find the perfect thing when you aren't even looking for it.

Una publicación compartida de Sarah Hart (@homeiswherethehartis) el

I put off re-potting that plant for the longest time for fear of killing it, but turns out it was really easy to do. #itslikemyfifthchild

Una publicación compartida de Sarah Hart (@homeiswherethehartis) el

A few weeks ago I posted a pic of my fiddleleaf fig, and a few kind people commented that I should prune it so that it wouldn't be so top heavy and to encourage new growth. I went back and forth about doing it because how could I chop off four years of growth?! Well, I did it (and almost shed a tear). I thought I'd give you a little update... since my fiddleleaf has always grown so quickly, I expected to see new growth like the next day. I mean, realistically I knew that wasn't going to happen, but after a week of no new growth I was convinced I had killed it. Fast forward a week and now it has two new branch buds! So pruning worked! It really worked! Plus, I put the clippings in water to start new baby plants, and they have already started to sprout roots. So if you're looking for a bushier fiddleleaf rather than a tall skinny one, I say prune away!

COCINA

Funfetti cupcakes cooling for my birthday boy while he naps. Two. TWO! Two years ago today I learned that sometimes you have to let go and just let things happen. I had held out hope up until that day that he would turn from breech to head down in time for delivery, but he had other plans, I guess. I was terrified, disappointed, pissed off and every other emotion you could think when I finally accepted the fact that I had to have a c-section for my fourth birth, but all of that went away as soon as I held our sweet boy. It didn't matter how he arrived because he was there in all of his newborn glory. He's really such a joy and lights up our lives in his own special way. Happy Birthday baby chipmunk. (Today he weighed in at a whopping 40 pounds at his check up!)

Every time I would go into the basement to do laundry (which is approximately 15 times a day) I would see our old kitchen island and wish we still used it. The kitchen is the heart (hart! bah!) of our home (duh!), and I realized I missed having those little rascals hang out with me around the island while I cooked dinner or did dishes. So last night I made it my mission to bring it up and make it work. After getting stuck in the stairwell about 2,692 times I decided it made more sense to take the whole damn thing apart. So here we are! I did it! It's a little tight, but I think it works... until they start fighting over who gets a stool.

#holidaybaking @ameliamarthelia was kind enough to send me her gingerbread cookie recipe, so I'm giving it a go! She joked when she sent it that the recipe sucked because it didn't include any directions, but I kind of think that's the best holiday baking - a recipe that has been passed down to you, handwritten on a card, and you make it year and after without the need of any directions. I'll let you know how they turn out!

I did my Thanksgiving shopping today, and since TJ's had greenery outside I couldn't resist buying it. I mean, it's flurrying outside, so I kinda had to. And I can't even tell you how excited I am to get our Christmas trees on Friday!

Pretty sure I should stick to cooking because I'm not much of a baker, but I'm going to fool you by calling this apple pie "rustic". I'm pretty sure the boys won't care one bit what it looks like though! #yesiusefrozenpiecrust #noshame #itsVERYrustic #kitchenmessfromhell

I never mind putting Halloween decorations away because it means Christmas is right around the corner. I feel like my Trader Joe's was a little late to the peony party this year, but better late than never, right? I'm in full party prep mode over here for a second grade teacher toast I'm hosting with my girl @birdlingbags tomorrow night (and not feeling stressed about it one bit because it's not at MY house ). I love that our district honors our teachers at the end of the school year because let's face it, they're all rockstars! #yestheresapottyinmykitchen

ENTRADAS Y PASILLOS

Already loving how this looks. We just need to put the screen on and figure out what we're doing about protecting it from the elements. Any ideas on something we can apply that won't change the color (because it matches our front door perfectly right now)? I tried a poly, but it made it look too red.

You probably already know about this food hack, but if not, I thought I'd share for those nights you wish you could change the clocks to bedtime without the kids noticing. #notthatihaveeverdonethat #thursdaysarealwaysrougharoundhere Ok, so just boil some pasta, drain, then add Trader Joe's bruschetta sauce, some kale or spinach and a bunch of parmesan cheese. Boom. Easy as that. And you didn't have to give the kids hot dogs for the second time this week. (You can serve it as a main dish, but I made some balsamic chicken to go along with it because I needed to use up the chicken sitting in my fridge.) Give it a try! If you're interested in the balsamic chicken, I simply lightly flour some chicken (I like the tenders because they cook quickly), then brown it on both sides in some olive oil and a little butter, take the chicken out, add some chicken stock, balsamic vinegar, garlic and maybe a tablespoon of butter. Whisk and reduce. Taste for seasoning - add a little salt & pepper, maybe a pinch of sugar. Add the chicken and juices back to the pan and simmer, turning the chicken occasionally, until its cooked through!

Each child's birthday is special and brings up its own set of memories, don't get me wrong, but my first son's birthday holds a little extra special meaning for me (and not that we celebrate in any extra special sort of way compared to my other sons' birthdays). Today, the boy who made me a mama turns 8, and I'm not quite sure how that's possible. I sat next to that tiny baby tucked into his car seat in the backseat of our jeep (totally not a baby-friendly vehicle, by the way ) and cried the entire way home from the hospital because I was terrified of failing as a mother. I've come a long way since then (and we've since upgraded to a minivan), and so has he. That tiny baby now reaches my shoulders and has become the kindest 8 year old you'll ever meet. Man, I really love him, and I really love being a mother. Time, you suck.

Turns out that dining table I found awhile ago on Craigslist was way too small for our dining room and 6 people (even the husband agreed), so it’s going in the basement for if we ever have an eat-in kitchen someday. Snagged this pretty sweet mid-century set for less than half the price of most dining chairs these days though, so score. The chairs need to be reupholstered eventually, but all I saw were the pretty lines! #kindaoverfarmhouseeverything #changeisgood

I'm not really a collector. In fact, I like to have as little stuff as possible laying around. I do like a collection that has some meaning though. Years ago my mother-in-law gave me her collection of Stangl pottery, and I think it looks so pretty in our dining room cabinet. I just received three more small pitchers in the mail that she recently found at a flea market and quickly added them to my collection.

Played a game of musical rugs today between the dining room, my room and the boys’ room, and turns out I like that rug I found on the side of the road ( ) better in here because it warms up the space. This space can be so weird sometimes, and people use it for different reasons - inspiration, a creative outlet, business, a visual diary, or maybe even to just hate read. I had no expectations when I made my profile public a little over a year ago, but I did it because I was attracted to the sense of community I was noticing. I wanted to be a part of that. I've lucked out and made some real, honest friendships through this space, and for that I'm grateful. I only wish I had that same community when my older boys were babies. • Today I was talking to one of those friends about rearranging her living room, which made gave me the itch to rearrange the boys' room.
